Context

Our Story

In 2018, Marcel sold his landscape design-build company in Colorado and moved his family of seven to Colombia, South America. In the small mountain town of Tabio, he met Rigoberto—“Rigo”—a seasoned coffee farmer who had recently relocated from Colombia’s southern coffee-growing region. Like many small farmers, Rigo had left his land after a poor harvest and came north searching for work and opportunity.

Fast forward to December 2021: Rigo, Zane (Marcel’s son), Ira (Zane’s brother), and Brian (Rigo’s son) were working together in a small-town carpentry shop. In between sawdust and side jobs, conversations turned to bigger dreams. Rigo shared an idea he had long held close: starting a coffee export company. For Colombian farmers, exporting directly is often out of reach due to layers of legal and logistical barriers. But if they could somehow bypass the middlemen, Rigo believed they could create something truly transformative—fair prices for growers, traceable quality for buyers, and a livelihood built on trust.

Together, Rigo, Marcel, and Zane spent the next two years working evenings and weekends to navigate Colombia’s complex export system. In late 2023, they finally secured their export license—and shipped their first small batch of roasted and green coffee via airfreight to the U.S.

Today, we’re working to connect directly with roasters in the U.S. who are looking for ethically sourced, high-quality Colombian coffee with a story they can stand behind.

Our Coffee

Origin:

Our roasted coffee is sourced almost entirely from Rigo’s extended family and friends—farmers he personally knows and trusts, whose farms he has walked, and whose growing practices he can vouch for.

Process:

After harvest, the green beans are dried and taken to a trusted local mill for processing and roasting. From there, the coffee travels 10 hours north to Rigo’s home, where his family packages and prepares each shipment. Once paperwork is finalized, Rigo delivers the export to the international airport—bound for Boise, Idaho. We currently distribute from Payette, ID and a second location in Pennsylvania.

  • La Plata Coffee Region:

La Plata is a renowned coffee-growing region in the Huila department of southern Colombia. Its high-altitude terrain (1,400–1,800 meters) and rich volcanic soil create ideal growing conditions.

  • Flavor Profile:

Expect bright acidity and a clean, complex cup. Flavor notes include chocolate, caramel, crisp apple, white grape, raspberry, vanilla, and unrefined sugarcane. It’s a well-balanced coffee with a sweet finish and vibrant character.

  • Farming Tradition:

Grown by smallholder farmers using traditional methods, La Plata coffee reflects generations of care and expertise. By working directly with these farmers, we ensure quality, transparency, and fair pricing from crop to cup.
